Miles Benjamin Anthony Robinson
This group consists of one guy with a really long name, but Miles Benjamin Anthony Robinson called in some friends, including members of TV on the Radio and Grizzly Bear, to help put this album together. The opening song, Buriedfed, brings Modest Mouse to mind. For better or worse, that’s about where that comparison ends. Go listen to some songs on Miles Benjamin Anthony Robinson’s myspace. Or just go buy Miles Benjamin Anthony Robinson now. You need this album. You really do.
Retribution Gospel Choir
One of my favorite albums of 2007 was Low’s Drums and Guns. It’s an amazing combination of beautiful and haunting. This album was put together by Low frontman Alan Sparhawk and features many of the songs from Drums and Guns cranked up with a new flair. While its certainly not as amazing as Drums and Guns, its definitely worth checking out (Retribution Gospel Choir myspace). Hell, you might even want to buy it.
Metronomy – Nights Out
Time to rev up the buzz machine. Metronomy is an electronic artist with a Limey background, and his second album, Nights Out, is due out in September. Rumor has it that its pretty awesome, and I would imagine that some of it will remind me of a more upbeat version of Hot Chip’s Made in the Dark. Go check out Metronomy’s myspace page. It doesn’t have any tracks from Nights Out just yet, but there are definitely some sweet jams on it.
Black Kids – Partie Traumatic
Black Kids hail from Jacksonville, Florida, and I promise I’m not just being racist. Their upcoming album, Partie Traumatic, will be hitting record stores on July 22nd. This is a fun party pop rock album that you’re going to enjoy, and I’m almost certain you’ll be dancing around in your socks and underwear with this one spinning. Check out Black Kids on myspace for some preview songs. Then, go preorder Partie Traumatic!
The Dedringers – Sweetheart of the Neighborhood
Woodyfest is fast approaching, and the musical highlight from my few years of attendance was the Dedringers. These two guys put on a great acoustic show with amazing harmonies. A year or two later I went on a road trip to Norman to see them perform at The Deli, only to discover that they had converted into a full blown band. Not entirely a bad thing, but we definitely preferred the acoustic set.
Now The Dedringers are about to release a new CD on Thursday, but you can download the entire album Sweetheart of the Neighborhood for free (don’t forget to add song numbers to your filenames). At the very least you should grab Heart of Gold. It definitely has the closest feel to their acoustic performance from years ago. I also strongly suggest you check out Institution and Sideman Blues, which you can preview on The Dedringers myspace page. Both songs have a rocking, gritty guitar feel. if you want to listen to some songs before you download them.
Ladytron – Velocifero
If this electronic album isn’t in your heavy rotation yet, put it there. You can waste your time checking out some songs on Ladytron’s myspace page, or you can just take my word for it and buy it: Ladytron – Velocifero.
Ocote Soul Sounds And Adrian Quesada – The Alchemist Manifesto
“The sounds are found at the intersection of the downtown dancefloor, the sweaty basement bembé, and the smoldering campfire on a remote beach. The songs were born on Brooklyn rooftops, Mayan pyramids, and Texas traffic jams. The music carries traces of long-lost corridos of Mexico, echoes of Yoruba godparents, of wistful soul music and Sufi poetry sung behind closed doors, blazing a path of love and mystery.”
If music can be sexy, and I believe it can, this album is definitive. Go listen on the Ocote Soul Sounds myspace page.
Beck – Modern Guilt
Though it’s scheduled to hit store shelves on July 8th, rumor has it that Beck’s new album has hit the streets… or the internet at least. Be a good music listener and buy the music you really enjoy.
